Interiors is an online journal, published on the 15th of each month, in which films are analyzed and diagrammed in terms of space. The film concerns itself with Kevin McCallister , a young boy whose family accidently leaves him home alone after leaving for a vacation. In this small suburban town, on Christmas, their home is targeted after a string of successful break-ins in the neighborhood.
The McCallister Residence as a result becomes the central space where the majority of the action in the film occurs. In their first collaboration together as writer and director, John Hughes and Christopher Columbus produced Home Alone . This quintessential Christmas film is a prime example of a “movie home” -- a home that is made iconic and famous with its appearance in a popular film. Kevin is subjected to the attic, but also finds salvation in his tree house. For decades now, people have visited the “Home Alone House” on Lincoln Avenue. “Most people who live on the street love it, and think it’s a lot of fun,” one nearby resident said in 2019. “It was a big deal having the movie filmed here, and it’s still a big deal.
Also the Marvelous Miss Maizel is my favorite because of the clothes and sets. Many architecture students and art students get asked to draw diagrams from 1 point perspective. Kevin’s treehouse was also specifically built for the film and ended up being taken down after filming wrapped. Today, the McCallister house would be hard to recognize inside. Gone are the days of green and red wallpaper and red carpeting on the stairs in the foyer – now replaced with modern grey paint and blue & white carpeting. The kitchen has also undergone some extensive work, now featuring elegant white shaker cabinets, green tile backsplash, and a small breakfast bar. The tacky wallpaper in the master suite has been replaced with a chic grey & white striped print.
The Home Alone house is located in Winnetka, Illinois, about 16 miles outside of the Windy City, and most of the film was shot in that area. The home itself was used for its brick exterior, although the movie also used interior shots in the living room and the foyer’s now-famous grand staircase. For movie fans, the brick suburban residence featured in the 1990 movie Home Alone is almost as familiar as Macaulay Culkin's adorable mug from the beloved holiday flick. Hi, your house looks great especially cowered in snow, as it was made to be like that all the time. I love symmetric houses, and Georgian style is one of my favorite – and I partly blame Home Alone for that , as I’m only 2 years older then the movie. The entire production of Home Alone was shot in the Chicago area! Even the parts that were supposed to be set in the Paris Orly Airport were actually filmed at O’Hare International Airport. The interior of the plane was a set built on a basketball court at the local high school. In fact, the scene where Kevin McCallister is trekking through the flooded basement is actually the school’s swimming pool. In our floor plan of the McCallister Residence, we examine the break-in that Harry and Marv plan, showing them at the back door. The floor plan features a dotted line for each of their routes throughout the robbery; each time a trap occurs on the first floor, we have drawn a silhouette of them.
There are many options – fairy house, dog house, treehouse, lighthouse, haunted house, mushroom house, etc. I would love to know how to figure out how to interpret a style of builder grade homes that don’t seem to fit into a specific architectural style. We live in a suburban neighborhood built in the early 2000s and every other house on the block looks the same. As we start updating and adding character Id love to know how to add certain types of architectural elements.
At first, the location manager expressed interest in using their Winnetka home for the Hughes film Uncle Buck, but that didn’t work out. Over a year passed before the Abendshiens were asked to use the house for Home Alone. Of course, they had no idea how popular the house would become. “We would have not believed back then that there would be sightseers coming to look at that house for years afterward,”John Abendshien told Vanity Fair in 2020.
While a large portion of the movie was filmed on a soundstage, shots of the home’s interior can still be found in the film. The scenes of the foyer’s grand staircase and the living room were the real-life Home Alone house. There were, however, some tiny changes made to facilitate some scenes in the film. For example, new wallpaper was added to make the house more festive. Oh, and the back door down the set of stairs outside – that actually wasn’t real. A backhoe was brought in to dig up that part of the property so that a fake door and steps could be added in.
The interior color palette was intentionally designed with seasonal red, green, and gold hues … it was inspired by antique cards and Norman Rockwell paintings. Sherwin-Williams, body of the home is Amazing Gray SW 7044 in satin finish, the exterior trim/columns/trim are Shoji White SW 7042. The cedar timber lintels above the windows are Porpoise SW 7046. The room to the right of the dining room is never used or shown in the film, and as a result, is excluded from Kevin’s own drawing. The production used an actual home for the setting of the film. The home’s location is 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois, north of Chicago.
